Sleep Disorders - Everything you Need to Know about Sleep Deprivation

Sleep disorder treatments come in many forms, from improving sleep hygiene to taking sleeping pills for insomnia. Insomnia treatments must be tailored to each patient’s individual needs. Sleep disorder causes can include physical disabilities, lifestyle choices and emotional disorders, and each cause requires different treatment.

Sleeping Pills for Insomnia

Sleeping pills for insomnia are perhaps the best known sleep aids, but the usefulness of medication as a sleep disorder treatment is limited. Long-term use of sleeping pills for insomnia may result in dependency, drug tolerance and side effects.

Sleeping pills for insomnia provide temporary relief, but do not treat the underlying cause of sleep disorders. Sleep medications are generally used as short-term insomnia treatments, often in combination with other sleep aids or treatments.

Herbal Sleep Aids

Herbal sleep aids, such as chamomile and valerian root, help some people get a good night’s rest, but should be used with caution. Many people believe herbal sleep aids are safer than sleeping pills for insomnia, but both types of treatments can have side effects. Always talk to a doctor about the safety of herbal sleep aids before using them as insomnia treatments.

Sleep Hygiene and Sleep Disorder Treatment

Having good sleep hygiene means making healthy choices and developing positive habits regarding sleep. Poor sleep hygiene promotes restless sleep and insomnia. Proper sleep hygiene can be an effective sleep disorder treatment, either alone or combined with other sleep aids.

Steps to improve sleep hygiene include:

  • Avoiding alcohol and caffeine in the hours before sleep
  • Going to bed around the same time each night
  • Skipping afternoon naps
  • Using the bedroom only for sleeping and sex.

Sleep Diaries

A sleep diary is a detailed journal used to help identify the cause of sleep disruptions. Sleep diary entries often include:

  • A record of time spent sleeping
  • Exercise records
  • Food and drink consumed before sleep
  • Medications
  • Stressful situations that might affect sleep.

As sleep aids, sleep diaries can be invaluable. For example, the diary may reveal that eating certain foods, dealing with particular people or exercising promotes better sleep or causes bouts of insomnia.

Hypnosis as Sleep Disorder Treatment

Hypnosis may be an effective sleep disorder treatment for some people. While rarely used as a standalone treatment, hypnosis can be a useful sleep aid. Some people use self hypnosis as a relaxation technique before bed, which might help improve sleep. Other people prefer to work with a licensed hypnotherapist and use hypnosis to identify emotional problems that interfere with sleep.

Getting Help for a Sleep Disorder

Sleep disorder and insomnia treatments need to be explored with a qualified doctor or sleep specialist. Sleeping problems can have a variety of causes, some of them serious, and a doctor will be able to evaluate symptoms and suggest the best treatment. In many cases, sleep problems are linked to other conditions, such as depression, and treating the underlying problem often resolves the sleeping problem.
